Belarusian State University featured in latest Times Higher Education rankings

MINSK, 12 September (BelTA) – Belarusian State University (BSU) has made it into the latest Times Higher Education (THE) rankings. The BSU has been included in the 1,001+ group, BelTA learned from the BSU press service.

The press service pointed out that the BSU is the only Belarusian university on THE's ranking. “According to the latest ranking released on 11 September, the BSU ranked 1,001+ out of 1,396 universities. All in all, there are around 30,000 universities in the world,” the university noted.

The University of Oxford, the California Institute of Technology, and the University of Cambridge hold the top three positions.

With regards to Belarus'neighboring countries, Russia is the most represented in the ranking. Out of 39 Russian universities in the ranking, the most successful are Lomonosov Moscow State University (189), Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (201-251), and Higher School of Economics (251-300). Ukraine is represented by Lviv Polytechnic National University (801+), Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (1,001+), National Technical University of Kharkiv (1,001+). Three Lithuanian universities are also featured in the ranking. These are Vilnius University (801+), Kaunas University of Technology (1,001+), and Vilnius Gediminas Technical Unicersity (1,001+).

Moreover, the new ranking includes 14 Polish universities. According to it, two best universities of Poland are Jagiellonian University and the University of Warsaw (601-800).

THE is recognized as one of the most influential and prestigious world rankings which assesses the best universities. “To make the ranking, a university should have over 1,000 research papers published in magazines of the Scopus database in the last five years. This is a demanding requirement for most Belarusian universities,”the BSU press service noted.

THE uses five groups of criteria to assess universities: research, citations, teaching (each accounts for 30% of the final score), international diversity (7.5%), and industry income (2.5%). “All BSU indicators of have improved. To remain in and climb up the ranking in the face of stiff competition, the BSU undertakes a set of activities, offering financial benefits in order to encourage scientists to publish research papers in world's leading magazines, buying subscriptions to full-text and bibliographic databases, and helping with methodological and organizational matters to prepare papers for publication,” the BSU said.
