Belarusian specialists to undergo training at Novovoronezh NPP

NOVOVORONEZH, 1 June (BelTA) – Belarusian specialists will undergo training at the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant in Russia, Vladimir Povarov, Rosenergoatom Deputy General Director, Novovoronezh NPP Director, told reporters on 1 June, BelTA has learned.

The Novovoronezh nuclear power plant welcomed participants of a media tour held as part of the international forum Atomexpo.

“Future operators of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP) near Ostrovets are undergoing training and internships at our training center. We also train representatives of security management agencies,” Vladimir Povarov said.

He noted that the BelNPP will be operated and serviced by highly qualified specialists. “I think that Belarus will be able to confidently and safely use the power-generating units that will be built,” Vladimir Povarov added.

The training at the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant is particularly relevant keeping in mind that power-generating unit No.6 of the Novovoronezh NPP was built to the AES-2006 design with a VVER-1200 nuclear reactor. So-called Generation-III+ reactors are currently constructed in the United States, France, Belarus and other countries. However, power-generating unit No.6 of the Novovoronezh NPP was the first of its kind in the world. It was put into operation in March 2016. It had been designed taking into account the Russian scientific and technical documentation requirements and the recommendations of the IAEA.

The design of power-generating units with Generation-III+ VVER-1200 reactors incorporates the most recent technologies and solutions satisfying all post-Fukushima requirements. VVER-1200 reactors have three key advantages. They are highly productive, durable and safe. Moreover, their operating life is about 60 years.

The key distinctive feature of the innovative power-generating unit is the unique combination of active and passive safety systems which ensure maximum resilience to international and external shocks. The new design provides protection against earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes and plane crashes. The reactor hall has double containment. Besides, there is a core melt trap installed under the reactor vessel.

The Novovoronezh nuclear power plant is located on the bank of the Don River 42km south of Voronezh. It is the first in Russia NPP with VVER-type reactors.
