Belarusian scientists develop heavy-duty body armor

MINSK, 6 January (BelTA) – Belarusian scientists have come up with a body armor able to protect its wearer from rifle bullets, BelTA learned from Alexander Laskovnev, Academician-Secretary of the Physical-Engineering Sciences Department of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, during the presentation of the Year of Science in Belarus on 6 January.

Alexander Laskovnev explained: “Scientists of our department take part in many research projects and endeavors as well as fight against terrorism. This year we are going to present a technology to build a heavy-duty body armor that can protect its wearer from rifle bullets with a heat-treated core. In other words, our body armor will be able to resist very powerful weapons.”

The official underlined that it is a Belarusian technology. Plans have been made to start making such body armor in 2017. Development study is already in progress.

Apart from that, a prototype of the Belarusian electric car based on a BelGee-made car will be made in 2017. The exterior of a new electric bus will be calculated and designed for the mechanical engineering company Belkommunmash. The developmental prototype of a mobile vacuum cleaner vehicle for utility providers will be created in 2017, too.

The development of multipurpose unmanned aerial vehicles with the flight range of up to 300km is in progress as well as the development of simulators to train the operators.

“We are working to develop a plant to process heavy oil residue such as petroleum tar and furnace oil. Apart from that, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus exercises scientific oversight over the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. Plans have been made to develop a system of burial sites for burying radioactive waste after the nuclear power plant is decommissioned,” said the Academician-Secretary.
