Belarusian satellite BKA-1 to stay in orbit till late 2018

MINSK, 20 January (BelTA) – The operational life of the first Belarusian satellite for the remote sensing of the Earth will be extended till late 2018, BelTA learned from Sergei Zolotoi, Director of the R&D enterprise Geoinformation Systems of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB), on 20 January.

“The warranty period of the BKA-1 satellite is five years. The period will end in mid-2017. We constantly keep an eye on the state of onboard systems. In practice the degradation of onboard systems turned out to be below our projections. This is why the decision to extend to operational life till late 2018 has been made,” said Sergei Zolotoi.

The decision was made by the manufacturing company in 2016. “A draft decree on extending the operational life of the satellite has been prepared. It has gone through all the approval steps and is now in the Belarus President Administration,” said Sergei Zolotoi.

The state of the onboard systems of the first Belarusian satellite for the remote sensing of the Earth will be evaluated once again in mid-2018. If the satellite is still in working condition and the projections are positive, the operational life may be extended one more time. The satellite has enough fuel till 2020, stated Sergei Zolotoi, Director of the R&D enterprise Geoinformation Systems of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
