Belarusian publication wins Russian Geographical Society award

MINSK, 23 May (BelTA) – The Belarusian publication Teacher's Geographic Atlas received the Crystal Compass award of the Russian Geographical Society, BelTA learned from the press service of Belarusian State University (BSU).

The atlas was second to none in the Publication nomination. BSU, the Belarusian Geographical Society, and the Belkartografiya company have been working on the atlas for five years. The publication is primarily targeted at geography teachers. The universities that train geographers can also use it as a study guide. The book contains scientific information about the Earth, physical, geographic, political, social and economic characteristics of countries and regions and about global problems. The publication includes around 700 maps, one-third of them being maps of Belarus. All the information published in the atlas is dated 2013-2014. The study guide is meant to be used within the next 20 years.

The libraries of the Belarusian schools have already received over 3,000 copies of the atlas. Around 500 books have gone on sale.

The Crystal Compass is an annual award established on 16 November 2012 by the Russian Geographical Society in Krasnodar, Russia. Partaking in the competition are Russian and foreign public organizations, scientific and educational institutions, companies from various fields along with independent initiative groups, public people, and other individuals.

The Crystal Compass winners are selected in 11 categories, including Scientific Achievement, Enlightenment, and Best Social Media Project on Conservation of Natural, Historical and Cultural Heritage. Over the six-year history the award has received over 1,204 participating projects from 82 Russian regions and 23 countries. About 1.4 million users took part in the special nomination Public Recognition, where the winner is chosen by the internet-voting.

In 2017 a record number of projects (389) were submitted to the competition from Russian regions, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, India, Monaco, Norway, and the U.S.
