Belarusian nuclear safety watchdog evaluating off-nominal situation's impact on safety

MINSK, 3 August (BelTA) – After an unscheduled examination of the Belarusian nuclear power plant the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gosatomnadzor) is evaluating the impact of the off-nominal situation involving the reactor vessel for the first power-generating unit on safety, BelTA learned from Oleg Sobolev, Head of the Communications and Public Information Office of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department.

The official said: “In line with the legislation the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department has received a notification from the state enterprise Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant about the off-nominal situation involving the first reactor vessel. In response the agency authorized and carried out an unscheduled examination and forbade operations involving the reactor vessel. Thus, the regulating agency has made intermediate decisions concerning the situation.”

Documents are being compiled to analyze the impact of the off-nominal situation on safety parameters.

The Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department also confirmed the statement made by Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk, who had said that there is no radioactive threat since there is no nuclear fuel or materials in Ostrovets.

“Further regulatory actions will depend on results of studying the documents and consequent conclusions about influence on safety,” explained Oleg Sobolev.

BelTA reported earlier that an off-nominal situation occurred on the night of 9-10 July at the site where the reactor vessel of the Belarusian nuclear power plant was stored during rigging operations meant to move the reactor vessel horizontally.
