Belarusian nuclear power plant to incentivize development of Ostrovets District, entire country

MINSK, 23 June (BelTA) – The construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant will give a powerful additional impulse to the development of Ostrovets District and the country as a whole. The statement was made by Chairman of the Ostrovets District Executive Committee, member of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Adam Kovalko in his report on the district's social and economic development taking into account the construction of the nuclear power plant during the fifth Belarusian People's Congress on 23 June, BelTA has learned.

The head of the district administration said that at present hundreds of Belarusian companies and organizations are busy working to implement the project, including construction companies, transportation ones, design institutes, and social sphere organizations. Over 30 organizations are employed at the construction site alone, including 22 Belarusian ones, employing a total of over 5,000 workers and specialists.

The housing infrastructure and the social one for construction workers and specialists of the Belarusian nuclear power plant are being created in parallel with the construction of the power plant itself. New residential areas with well-developed infrastructure were built in Ostrovets in the last 2-3 years. According to the executive, every construction worker and every specialist lives in well-furnished apartments.

The necessary social infrastructure is being created as well. In January 2015 a pre-school children daycare center was commissioned as well as a gymnasium with modern physical infrastructure and fitting sport gear. Plans have been made to build another school and two children daycare centers soon as well as a stadium with versatile sport gear and a social and cultural center. The expansion of the district hospital has begun.

According to the delegate, the Belarus president's instructions to build a cluster of energy-intensive innovative enterprises around the Belarusian nuclear power plant were well-timed. Adam Kovalko said such enterprises will allow more effectively using the electricity the nuclear power plant will generate. They will also create more jobs and will allow starting the manufacturing of export-oriented and import-substituting products.

Adam Kovalko underlined that the construction of social infrastructure facilities, the development of small and medium private enterprises, the establishment of new manufacturing sites will give jobs to employable Belarusians from the families of the construction workers and the personnel involved in building and running of the Belarusian nuclear power plant.

The Chairman of the Ostrovets District Executive Committee commented on several remarks about the safety of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. Adam Kovalko stressed that a reliable and safe nuclear power plant is being built in Belarus. The safety is manifested as design documents, technical specifications of the equipment being installed, high-quality construction and installation work, step-by-step and systemic oversight.
