Belarusian nuclear industry watchdog ready for full assessment of nuclear power plant safety

OSTROVETS, 20 September (BelTA) – The Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gosatomnadzor) is ready to fully evaluate the safety of the Belarusian nuclear power plant, BelTA learned from Gosatomnadzor Head Olga Lugovskaya on 20 September.

“There is no doubt we are intent on fully evaluating safety. Stress tests represent a way to evaluate safety under extreme conditions, this is why carrying them out is very important for the sake of confidence in all the facets of safety of our nuclear power plant,” noted the official.

The Gosatomnadzor Head thanked representatives of the European Commission, who visited Belarus on 19-20 September, for detailed and consistent explanations of how all the stress test procedures are carried out in the European Union.

“We've received a huge amount of information. We have asked all the questions we were interested in,” said Olga Lugovskaya. “Certainly, we are ready to receive assistance from the European Union. We are now working very actively with our European colleagues. Projects to get international technical aid from the European Union are in progress in Belarus. Any assistance from experienced colleagues is naturally useful.”
