Belarusian, Italian, Spanish experts to attend conference on longevity in Sardinia

MINSK, 21 June (BelTA) – Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, will play host to an international conference on longevity and active ageing on 24 June. The conference initiated by Roberto Pili, President of the Global Community of Longevity, will bring together experts from Italy, Belarus, and Spain, Honorary Consul of Belarus in Cagliari Giuseppe Carboni told BelTA.

The list of participants features representatives of the University of Cagliari (Italy), the University of Malaga (Spain), and also Yelena Makeyeva, the head of the national coordination center for access to genetic resources and benefit-sharing of the Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.

Giuseppe Carboni noted that Sardinia is one of the five regions in the world with the biggest number of long-livers. The cooperation between the local and Belarusian experts will contribute to the study of the relationship between longevity, diet, environment, and lifestyle, and also the role of genetic factors.

“The conference is a continuation of the effort to develop cooperation that started with the international scientific workshop held in Minsk in November 2016 to compare the Sardinian Mediterranean diet and the Belarusian diet for better health and active lifestyle in old age. Plans have been made to conduct joint research involving scientists of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia and Belarus. The research will focus on Sardinian and Belarusian long-livers aged over 100,” Giuseppe Carboni said.
