Belarusian helicopter drops nearly 600 tonnes of water on forest fire in Georgia

MINSK, 25 August (BelTA) – A helicopter of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry dropped almost 600 tonnes of water on the forest fire near Georgia's Borjomi, BelTA learned from the ministry's official representative Vitaly Novitsky.

“The aircraft of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry dropped 585 tonnes of water on the wildfire near the Georgian town of Borjomi within two days. According to the satellite data, the fire has diminished considerably. The firefighting effort of the Belarusian crew continues,” Vitaly Novitsky remarked.

The forest fire in the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park broke out on 20 August. Strong winds rapidly spread the fires all over the national park. Since there are no firefighting aircraft in Georgia, rescuers spent an entire night cutting trees to make a way for fire trucks. The fire is believed to have resulted from careless human activity.

BelTA reported earlier that the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry sent a heavy Mi-26 helicopter to Georgia upon the president's instructions.
