Belarusian firefighters watching nuclear emergency response exercise in Russia's Saratov Oblast

MINSK, 19 September (BelTA) – Specialists of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry are watching an exercise designed to train the localization and liquidation of consequences of major accidents at nuclear power plants. The exercise is in progress at the Balakovo nuclear power plant in Saratov Oblast, Russia, representatives of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry told BelTA.

Specialists from Armenia, Sweden, France, and South Korea are also going to watch the exercise. The scenario of the exercise is built around a virtually improbable combination of unfavorable factors – natural cataclysms and malfunctioning nuclear reactors. The exercise is designed to practice interaction between various agencies and technical systems. Such exercises are held every year at one of the Russian nuclear power plants.

The Belarusian delegation visited a Rosenergoatom crisis center in Moscow on 19 September. It is one of the world's and Europe's largest information systems used to receive, process, and rebroadcast data from nuclear power plants. Such systems come in handy not only for practicing to respond to an emergency and responding to an actual emergency but also for checking electricity generation on a daily basis, for coordinating R&D efforts, and for raising the awareness of the general public.
