Belarusian Embassy in Moscow marks 135th birthday of poet Yanka Kupala

MOSCOW, 25 May (BelTA) – The business and culture center of the Belarusian Embassy in Russia has hosted events to celebrate the 135th anniversary of the birth of prominent Belarusian poet Yanka Kupala, BelTA learned from the press service of the embassy.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Russia Igor Petrishenko said at the opening of the celebrations that every country has names that it is proud of. “These include names that are part of the global heritage, since their fame has gone beyond the boundaries of geography and time. The name of Yanka Kupala is one of them,” the diplomat noted.

He said that Yanka Kupala's masterpieces are a historic achievement that propelled the Belarusian literature to global recognition. “Yanka Kupala looked into the hearts of the Belarusian people, showed their character, hopes and expectations, and their inherent desire ‘to be called people',” the ambassador emphasized.

To mark the poet's 135th birthday, the Yanka Kupala State Literary Museum prepared a unique exhibition offering a new look at this eminent personality. The exhibition showcases items from the holdings of the museum, including little-known photographs of Yanka Kupala.

The celebrations at the Belarusian Embassy in Russia featured a performance by the famous Belarusian band Pesnyary. Yelena Leshkovich, the director of the Yanka Kupala State Literary Museum, noted that the poet's works have always inspired Belarusian artists and musicians. Today there are over 200 music pieces to the poems of Yanka Kupala: an opera, an oratorio, a rock opera, and a great many songs.

The event at the Belarusian Embassy was attended by representatives of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Eurasian Economic Commission, the Union State Standing Committee, the Government of Moscow, the diplomatic corps, people of art, and the Belarusian community in Russia.
