Belarusian artists to take part in Maslenitsa celebrations in Sardinia

MINSK, 16 February (BelTA) – Belarusian artists will participate in Maslenitsa celebrations in Italy's Sardinia, BelTA learned from Giuseppe Carboni, Belarusian Honorary Consul in Cagliari.

“The autonomous region of Sardinia will mark Maslenitsa on 18 February. The post-Soviet diaspora living there thanks to the initiative of Belarus' Honorary Consulate will introduce local citizens to the traditional rites of the ancient holiday which symbolizes the end of winter and the beginning of Great Lent,” Giuseppe Carboni noted.

Some Belarusian artists will take part in the event, among them Vladimir Ginko (accordion), and Maria Kuchinskaya (cimbalom). They will celebrate Maslenitsa together with Belarusian, Russian, and Ukrainian residents of Sardinia. The program will feature music, songs, dances, folk games, pancake tasting, and ceremonies to present prizes and gifts. Maslenitsa celebrations will be organized with the assistance of Fondazione di Sardegna (Sardinia Foundation).

Such celebrations have already become a good tradition: in 2017, the Year of Belarusian Culture in Sardinia, over 180 Belarusian artists joined the celebrations in the autonomous region. Early 2018 also saw events dedicated to the Belarusian culture: Music Kvarto quarter from Bobruisk gave two successful concerts in January.
