Belarusian army's rearmament plans for 2017 unveiled

MINSK, 23 February (BelTA) – Belarus is considering buying Su-30SM aircraft, BelTA learned from the latest interview of Belarusian Defense Minister Andrei Ravkov with the newspaper SB. Belarus Segodnya.

There are plans to buy 120mm mortars Nona-M1 and unmanned aerial vehicle systems for various purposes. Apart from that, major overhaul of Mi-24K and Mi-8PS helicopters, IL-76MD aircraft, T-72B tanks, and BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles will be arranged. The modernization of the armored personnel carriers BTR-79MB1 will begin while the modernization of the T-72BM1 tanks will continue.

The Defense Minister summed up intermediate results of the ongoing combat readiness evaluation. He pointed out that the evaluation had been arranged on schedule. It is not supposed to reciprocate combat training events in neighboring countries as some people are quick to assume. “Every year we focus on checking various links in the army control system and do so comprehensively and abruptly. The units we examine act in real conditions. They have to make calculations, make decisions, and carry out assigned missions within the specified timeframe,” said the Belarusian Defense Minister.

In the first few years many commanding officers and their subordinates experienced serious difficulties, for instance, with switching military units to wartime footing and personnel numbers. “Intermediate results of the ongoing combat readiness evaluation indicate that the troops are handling well their assigned tasks. About 3,000 reservists have been recalled to active duty in an organized manner. The troops deployed to their assigned areas on schedule and without failure. The planned tactical exercises went off without a hitch. Once the combat readiness evaluation is over, we will analyze the data more thoroughly,” concluded Andrei Ravkov.
