Belarus, Vietnam map out joint youth projects

SOCHI, 18 October (BelTA) – Andrei Belyakov, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the BRSM Youth Union, member of the Council of the Republic, and Nguyen Phi Long, Secretary of the Vietnamese Communist Youth Union, discussed Belarus-Vietnam joint youth projects on the sidelines of the 19th World Festival of Youth and Students, BelTA has learned.

Andrei Belyakov and Nguyen Phi Long agreed that it is necessary to prolong the 2010 cooperation agreement between the two organizations, which expired in 2015, and review a number of specific joint projects.

Andrei Belyakov stated that the BRSM closely cooperates with various international organizations. “However, we see particular interest in fostering relations with countries that have preserved organizations that are legal successors to the Komsomol. We think that we have some experience to share, and that young people can play a bridging role in our bilateral relations,” he pointed out.

Nguyen Phi Long stressed that the high level of Belarus-Vietnam relations provides a good background for the development of bilateral youth cooperation. The secretary inquired how many members the BRSM has and what the youth union's main areas of activity are. Nguyen Phi Long noted that the two organizations share similar approaches to work with young people.

The Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union unites around seven million young people; the BRSM Youth Union has about 500,000 members. This makes them the most numerous youth organizations of Vietnam and Belarus, respectively.
