MINSK, 4 December (BelTA) – The implementation of Belarus' information strategy on the full inclusion of disabled persons in the society will show Belarus as a comfortable country for everyone, Belarusian Information Minister Alexander Karlyukevich noted during the ceremony to sign the document, BelTA has learned.
According to the minister, Belarus and the UNDP share the same goals: to shape a full-fledged society for everyone and thus build a civil society. These goals cannot be achieved without the help of journalists, partnership of non-governmental organizations, and government institutions. Readers, viewers, and those who discover the information space in social media have already noted this multifaceted work and regard Belarus as a country with opportunities for everyone, Alexander Karlyukevich highlighted.
Belarus makes a lot of effort to provide disabled persons with access to the existing services, said UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in Belarus Sanaka Samarasinha. An important step was the signing of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the adoption of a national plan to implement the convention.
Apart from all the measures being taken, it is also necessary that changes occur in the hearts of people with and without disabilities to show that everyone is equal, Sanaka Samarasinha underlined. In this respect, the media play a great role as they can open a window to the world for disabled people. Journalists can also help persons without disabilities think about the problems faced by disabled people. The latter should also have an opportunity to fully realize their potential, the UNDP representative stressed.
