Belarus to help ITU monitor satellite emissions

MINSK, 16 November (BelTA) – Belarus will help the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to monitor the operation of space satellites. The relevant agreement was signed by Belarusian Information Technologies and Communications Minister Sergei Popkov and ITU Secretary General Houlin Zhao on 16 November, BelTA has learned.

During the meeting the sides discussed Belarus' interaction with the International Telecommunication Union in developing information and communication technologies. As a result of the discussion the sides signed an agreement on assisting the International Telecommunication Union with taking measurements of harmful interference when a telecommunication administration requests the ITU's assistance.

The agreement will create the legal foundation for using the Belarusian emission control station upon the ITU's requests for monitoring emissions of space satellites to counteract harmful interference. Belarus will also help verify the correct assignment of frequencies to the satellites on the ITU's registry by checking what frequencies of the radio spectrum are actually used.

In line with the agreement Belarus will be paid for using its emission control station to fulfill orders of the International Telecommunication Union.

The agreement and the inclusion of the Belarusian emission control station into the international emission control network will help bolster Belarus' prestige as a space power, representatives of the Belarusian Information Technologies and Communications Ministry told BelTA. It will also help step up contacts with the International Telecommunication Union in addition to contributing to Belarus' active inclusion into the international community of telecommunication administrations and satellite communication operators.

A Belarusian delegation is in Bangkok to take part in the ITU Telecom World 2016 forum. The forum has been arranged under the aegis of the International Telecommunication Union. Belarusian Information Technologies and Communications Minister Sergei Popkov presented the Belarusian experience during the roundtable session arranged for information and communication technology ministers to discuss the government's role in digital economy growth.
