Belarus takes part in international disaster response exercise

MINSK, 30 March (BelTA) – Belarus together with other countries of the Eastern Partnership initiative took part in the EU joint disaster response exercise Moldex 2017 on 28 and 29 March. The information is posted on the EU Neighbors website, BelTA has learned.

The exercise was held simultaneously in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova and three EU member states. It tested the EU mechanism to facilitate the international response to natural disasters. The scenario included an earthquake causing collapse of buildings and rupture of a dam leading to floods in Moldova. The country's civil protection and emergency situations service appealed for international assistance to the Emergency Response Coordination Center (ERCC) in Brussels which notified the countries participating in the exercises.

It was the first time that the exercise was conducted in such a format. Everything went according to the plan. The organizers intend to sum up the lessons learned and improve the system.

The exercise is part of the program on prevention, preparedness and response to natural and man-made disasters in the countries of the Eastern Partnership.
