Belarus, Russia urged to improve coordination of joint scientific programs

MOSCOW, 14 April (BelTA) – Belarus and Russia should improve coordination of their joint scientific programs, Piotr Vityaz, Head of the Office of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) co-chairing the Inter-Academy Council on Development of the Belarus-Russia Union State, said at the meeting of the council in Moscow on 13 April, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Embassy in Russia.

“We should find strategic areas in which we can use science to produce competitive equipment and technologies in order to promote their gradual development,” Piotr Vityaz said.

Aleksei Kubrin, Deputy State Secretary of the Union State co-chairing the Inter-Academy Council, noted that 2017 is the Year of Science in Belarus. He believes that this will contribute to the intensification of the relations between the NASB and the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). “Our task is to transform the Inter-Academy Council into a body able to produce considerable influence on the development of technology in our countries,” he stressed.

RAS Academician Sergei Aldoshin said that several events devoted to the cooperation between the NASB and the RAS will be held in the near future. They will be timed to coincide with the Fourth Belarus-Russia Forum of Regions that will be held in late June.

The meeting of the Inter-Academy Council considered new concepts and drafts of Union State programs, strategy for the development of the common science and technology space of the Union State, progress in the development of the Earth remote sensing system in Belarus, and other matters.

The Inter-Academy Council on Development of the Belarus-Russia Union State was established in 2004. It comprises prominent Belarusian and Russian scientists, and also representatives of the Union State Standing Committee. The council is designed to coordinate the research and organizational activities of the academies of sciences of the two countries, make forecasts regarding the development of the Union State based on scientific research, and participate together with executive authorities in establishing tasks and priorities for scientific activities.
