Belarus, Russia set to cooperate in personalized medicine

MINSK, 26 May (BelTA) – The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) and the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) are set to develop cooperation in cell technologies and personalized medicine, Mikhail Paltsev, Chief Academic Secretary of the RAS Presidium, said ahead of the joint meeting of the NASB Presidium and the RAS Presidium on 26 May, BelTA has learned.

“We have great prospects for cooperation in medicine, specifically in the development of new treatment technologies, for instance, cell technologies. This is a very promising area. We have been considering such a project with our Belarusian colleagues for the past two years. The talks are nearing completion, and the final decision on financing will be made soon. We will also discuss matters related to the development of a system of personalized medicine. Such a system will be created in Russia by 2025. The Belarusian colleagues are also interested in this matter. We have some jointly designed solutions. The development of new methods of diagnostics is another interesting field. Belarus has breakthrough achievements that have been adopted by Russia: molecular diagnostics, genetic identification, and evaluation of the risk of congenital anomalies in fetuses,” Mikhail Paltsev said.

Valery Kozlov, Acting President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, pointed out that Belarusian and Russian scientists are conducting joint research in various areas. “We are very glad to see that the NASB and RAS institutes maintain close ties. We are running a very successful project in mathematical modeling of natural processes using supercomputers. We also have an interesting project to study the evolution of peat deposits in Belarus and Western Siberia. We are working together to increase potato yield. Our chemists are doing research on catalyst agents,” he noted. Remote sensing of the Earth is also a major cooperation area, Valery Kozlov added.

The joint meeting of the NASB Presidium and the RAS Presidium in Minsk was attended by a large delegation of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The participants discussed the cooperation between the Belarusian and Russian academies, and the participation of their institutes in the programs of the Belarus-Russia Union State.
