Belarus Prosecutor General comments on arrest of Yuri Baranchik in Russia

MINSK, 17 March (BelTA) – Prosecutor General of Belarus Alexander Konyuk has given comments to the media on the arrest of Yuri Baranchik in Russia, BelTA has learned.

Alexander Konyuk noted that extradition includes certain procedures. The Office of the Prosecutor General of Russia will provide Belarus with relevant documents. “We will issue all necessary documents for that. A priori, when a person commits a crime, he should be extradited. His request for political asylum is nothing but a trick to attract publicity,” the Prosecutor General said.

As BelTA reported earlier the Belarusian Investigation Committee continues the investigation of the criminal case against Sergei Shiptenko, Yuri Pavlovets and Dimitry Alimkin who were charged under Article 130-3 of the Criminal Code (incitement of racial, national, religious or social hatred or strife by a group of individuals).

In the course of the investigation, the Investigative Committee established the involvement of Yuri Baranchik, a citizen of Belarus permanently residing in Moscow, in the unlawful activity under Article 130 of the Criminal Code.

On the basis of the collected materials, an order was issued to put Yuri Baranchik on the wanted list and ensure his pretrial detention. Yuri Baranchik was apprehended in Moscow as part of the Rozysk operation. Yuri Baranchik is currently in Russia pending an extradition decision.
