SMORGON, 26 November (BelTA) – Belarus is open to cooperation with all who are concerned about the global terrorist threat, Chairman of the State Border Committee of Belarus Leonid Maltsev said on 26 November as he attended the opening of the renovated barracks of the Belarusian State Educational Border Guard Service Institute in Smorgon, BelTA has learned.
“The current international situation clearly demonstrates that only through joint efforts can we successfully counter challenges and threats to the security of our borders. The Belarusian authorities are fully aware of the gravity of these problems and pay special attention to developing effective cooperation with our neighboring states and international organizations involved in combating international terrorism and cross-border crime. We are open to cooperation with everyone concerned over these problems,” Leonid Maltsev noted.
He added that the State Border Committee of Belarus, the European Union, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, and the International Organization for Migration are implementing joint initiatives to boost cooperation. “The AMBEL program is a logical continuation of the targeted efforts of the Belarusian border service and our partners to create the modern image of the state border. By embracing new technologies and approaches, we are able to effectively respond to the rapidly changing situation and take the necessary measures to ensure border security,” Leonid Maltsev added.
The project to renovate the barracks of the Belarusian State Educational Border Guard Service Institute was carried out in line with the joint project “Supporting the Republic of Belarus in Addressing Irregular Migration and Promoting Human Rights of Vulnerable Migrants (AMBEL).” The project launched in 2013 is aimed at building the capacity of the Belarusian border service to counter illegal migration and ensure the rights of asylum-seekers and victims of trafficking in human beings, and unaccompanied minors crossing the Belarusian border.
