Belarus on par with European average in terms of ICT development

MINSK, 12 May (BelTA) – In terms of ICT development Belarus is on a par with the European average, Belarus' Communications and Information Technology Minister Sergei Popkov said at an online press conference hosted by BelTA.

“We are at the average European level, somewhere close to the Czech Republic, Slovakia. Development of the ICT sector in Belarus continues,” Sergei Popkov said. The Scandinavian countries are leaders in Europe in terms of ICT development, and the Republic of Korea is the global leader.

According to the Regional Commonwealth in the field of Communications (RCC), Belarus is among the RCC leaders in terms of the development of information and communication technologies. In the last 5-6 years, the country has held the leading positions in virtually all types of services: fixed telephony penetration, broadband Internet subscriptions per 100 inhabitants, and mobile Internet penetration.

When asked about the prospects of the development of television, Sergei Popkov said that by the end of the year all TV channels that are included in the public television package should start broadcasting in 16:9 format. Another task is to switch to high definition broadcasting (HD, Full HD). First of all this is the task for cable operators, and they have already started to implement it.
