Belarus, Latvia to improve coordination between border services

VITEBSK, 27 June (BelTA) – The coordination between customs officers and border guards working on the Belarusian-Latvian border will be improved, Ilmars Snucins, Deputy State Secretary on Tax, Customs and Accountancy at the Latvian Ministry of Finance, told reporters on 27 June, BelTA has learned.

The Vitebsk Oblast Executive Committee hosted the first meeting of the subcommission for the operation and coordinated development of crossing points on the Belarusian-Latvian border on 27 June. “We cannot develop a crossing point on one side only, without coordinating the technical matters with our colleagues from the other side. It is important to not only build a compatible infrastructure, but also coordinate the work of all border services. We will make effort to improve quadripartite cooperation, so that Belarusian and Latvian customs officers and border guards work coherently at all levels,” Ilmars Snucins noted.

Deputy Chairman of the State Customs Committee Alexander Bogdevich agreed with him. “The services of the two countries should cooperate effectively to ensure that there are no unjustified obstacles to the movement of people and goods across the border either on the Belarusian or the Latvian side. In general, I would like to say that the customs infrastructure on the external border of the Eurasian Economic Union is gradually built up. We identify the trouble spots and work to eliminate them to boost the trade between the countries of the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union,” Alexander Bogdevich added.

The meeting signed a document stipulating mutual commitments of the sides in the subcommission. “We have coordinated the approaches of the four services to the management of emergencies such as, for instance, an information system breakdown or a sudden spike in traffic. The agreements we have reached today will help us increase the throughput capacity of border control points,” Alexander Bogdevich stressed.

The decision to establish a subcommission of the Belarusian-Latvian intergovernmental commission for economic, scientific and technical cooperation was made in 2014. The subcommission deals with highly specialized issues related to the management processes on the Belarusian-Latvian border.
