Belarus' Interior Ministry backs tougher DUI laws

MINSK, 24 September (BelTA) – The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus backs the proposals regarding tougher DUI laws, Minister of Internal Affairs Igor Shunevich told reporters on 24 September, BelTA informs.

“We are always in favor of tougher punishment for DUI. We are convinced that drunk drivers are potential murderers. People realize what they are doing when they get drunk, then drive a car which is a source of increased danger and can cause a traffic accident,” Igor Shunevich said.

In his words, any proposal concerning tougher DIU laws will be supported in the ministry. “More than that, we are very likely to the co-authors of these proposals,” the minister added.

It was reported earlier that Belarus' Prosecutor General Alexander Konyuk spoke about the possible toughening of the corresponding legislation at the session of the CIS Coordination Council of Prosecutors General in Dushanbe on 20 September. In his words, plans have been made to introduce a minimal term and increase a maximum term of punishment for driving under the influence with grave consequences, revise the regulations concerning a mandatory revocation of a driver's license for five years.

“Such measures will bolster positive trends in road traffic security, reduce the number of DIU-related violations and crimes, decrease the number of road traffic accidents caused by drunk drivers and the number of casualties,” Alexander Konyuk is convinced.
