Belarus, IAEA discuss preparations for review missions

VIENNA, 20 September (BelTA) – Belarusian Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk and IAEA Deputy Director General, Head of the Nuclear Energy Department Mikhail Chudakov discussed the preparations for conducting the IAEA's review missions in Belarus on the sidelines of the 61st session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna on 20 September, BelTA has learned.

The sides examined the progress in the BelNPP construction, talked about the results of the IAEA's missions and visits of experts to the country over the last year, and discussed the preparations for the IAEA's key review missions to be undertaken in Belarus before the BelNPP becomes operational.

Mikhail Chudakov stressed that the IAEA is keen to advance cooperation with Belarus in nuclear power infrastructure development. He commended Belarus' openness and emphasized the IAEA's commitment to provide further assistance to the country.

The sides touched upon the strategy of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel management and discussed plans for cooperation in this field.

Belarus will welcome the IAEA's Emergency Preparedness Review (EPREV) mission in March 2018. Later on but prior to the commissioning of the BelNPP's first power-generating unit Belarus will host an Operational Safety Review Team mission and an Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review mission.

The 61st session of the General Conference will last till 22 September. An exhibition entitled “Belarusian Nuclear Power Program: Priority — Safety” and dedicated to the Belarusian nuclear power plant opened during the conference.
