OSTROVETS, 26 May (BelTA) – Belarus expects to get the report of the Site and External Events Design (SEED) mission in the near future, Belarusian Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk said when answering questions from foreign diplomats after a visit to the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP) on 26 May, BelTA has learned.
“We have just recently asked them when we would get the SEED mission's final report. They said the report was almost ready and was going through the final review. We hope to get it in the near future,” Mikhail Mikhadyuk noted.
The deputy minister said that the scope of the SEED mission was determined by the recommendations of the sixth session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Espoo Convention. “We conducted the mission in compliance with the recommendations and released its preliminary results to the public,” Mikhail Mikhadyuk said.
Belarus hosted a SEED mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) from 16 to 20 January. The IAEA team of experts concluded that the Belarusian authorities have taken into due account all external hazards that may pose risks to the BelNPP in developing the design of the plant. The team identified good practices and provided the following suggestions for improvements: further improve licensing documentation related to information on electromagnetic and lightning hazards, and information on site-specific seismic ground motion; give consideration to future developments of safety improvements related to challenges highlighted in the IAEA Fukushima Daiichi Accident report.
