Belarus' Energy Ministry: BelNPP meets all safety requirements

MINKS, 24 August (BelTA) – The Belarusian nuclear power plant project complies with all safety requirements, Belarusian Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk told the participants of the media tour dedicated to Belarus-Russia interaction in nuclear energy on 24 August, BelTA has learned.

“Our top priority when building and operating the nuclear power plant is safety. We are fully aware of the responsibility towards the Belarusian nation and the global community. We ensure safety at all stages of the project's implementation,” Mikhail Mikhadyuk remarked.

He recalled that numerous cutting-edge systems that guarantee the BelNPP's safe operation make an integral part of the Generation III+ AES-2006 design. As of today, VVER-1200 is the most powerful reactor that has three key advantages: high efficiency, long service life, and safety. Strict control is kept at all stages of construction and installation works and the production of equipment, the latter being examined at the manufacturing plants and double-checked at the construction site. Operational meetings chaired by Belarus Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Semashko are held every month at the construction site in Ostrovets to monitor the construction works.

The BelNPP specialists are trained in compliance with very high requirements at the training center in Ostrovets. They also undertake internships in Russia.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is built using the Russian Generation III+ AES-2006 design near Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast. The first power-generating unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2019, with the second one to go online in 2020.
