Belarus' emergency prevention system hailed

MINSK, 31 May (BelTA) – Belarus has a well-developed emergency prevention system, head of the strategic support department of the UN Development Program in Belarus Vyacheslav Shelegeiko told media on 31 May, BelTA has learned.

“Belarus has a well-adjusted state emergency prevention and management system. Experts discuss ways to improve this system within the framework of international procedures,” said Vyacheslav Shelegeiko.

According to the head of the department, Minsk is playing host to the final stage of the UNDP project Post-Disaster Needs Assessment: Improving information systems of planning and needs assessment during the recovery period. At the seminar UNDP experts and representatives of several ministries discuss the compatibility of the national legislation and international methods in post-disaster needs assessment.

According to the expert, spring floods, forest and peat-bog fires are the most commonly encountered emergencies in Belarus. They damage the country's economy, agriculture and utility services, people's welfare. According to Vyacheslav Shelegeiko, the UNDP has helped and will continue provide support to Belarus in dealing with these phenomena.
