Belarus drafts fifth National Action Plan for Gender Equality

MINSK, 24 November (BelTA) – Belarus has prepared a draft of the fifth National Action Plan for Gender Equality, Yelena Komlik, Senior Specialist of the Department for Population, Gender and Family Policy at Belarus' Labor and Social Security Ministry, said at a press conference on 24 November.

Yelena Komlik noted that Belarus has already implemented four national action plans for gender equality, which is essential for the fulfillment of Belarus' international commitments on gender equality and equal opportunities.

In 2016, Belarus submitted its eighth periodic report on the implementation of the provisions of the CEDAW Convention to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women. The recommendations suggested by the international community were considered when drafting the fifth National Action Plan for Gender Equality for 2016-2020, Yelena Komlik said.

“We have achieved considerable progress in terms of gender equality and equal opportunities both domestically and internationally. Belarus ranks among the fifteen countries with the value of female Human Development Index (HDI) equal to or exceeding that of the male HDI. Besides, Belarus is 31st out of 187 countries in the Gender Inequality Index, and occupies 25th position out of 178 countries on the Mothers' Index, ranking first among the CIS countries,” Yelena Komlik added.
