Belarus deports 267 people in crackdown on illegal migrants

MINSK, 26 May (BelTA) – The Belarusian Interior Ministry has summed up results of Operation Nelegal that was carried out on 17-20 May in association with state security agencies and the border service, BelTA has learned.

Konstantin Shalkevich, Head of the Information and Public Relations Office of the Belarusian Interior Ministry, said that 267 people have been deported for gross violations of rules of stay. In view of the crimes detected in the course of the special operation as many as 28 criminal cases have been opened against foreign citizens, including one for organizing illegal migration and 25 for violating the timeframe of the prohibition to enter the Republic of Belarus. Five people on the wanted list have been apprehended.

Police has brought administrative charges against over 2,000 foreigners for violating rules of stay in Belarus and employment rules. Law enforcement agencies directed their attention to more effective control over the stay of foreigners in Belarus, detection of illegal migrants and the prevention and suppression of the crimes and infringements they commit.

As part of the special operation police raided marketplaces, bus and railway stations, halls of residence and rented apartments. Apart from that, the legality of employing foreign labor by Belarusian companies was examined. Over 20 executives have faced administrative charges following the detected violations.
