Belarus cooperates with Poland in interregional statistics

MINSK, 20 August (BelTA) – The regions of Belarus and Poland are implementing joint projects in statistics, which is new experience of cooperation for Belarus, Chairwoman of the National Statistics Committee of Belarus Inna Medvedeva told the media on 20 August, BelTA has learned.

“Poland is the only country with which Belarus closely cooperates at the level of interregional statistics. The main statistical offices of Grodno Oblast and Brest Oblast work directly with Bialystok and Lublin, publish materials on transboundary statistics, for example, on the Belovezhskaya Pushcha. Bialystok in Poland is responsible for environmental statistics,” Inna Medvedeva explained.

She also stressed the importance of cooperation with partners from Estonia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Poland, other countries, and especially Russia. “We exchange the latest solutions in the field of statistical methodology, organize bilateral consultations on the population census, hold regular visits on specific topics, and study each other's experience,” the head of the Belarusian National Statistics Committee said.

According to Inna Medvedeva, Belarus' practices often become the basis for similar statistical studies in other countries. “While the trial census was in progress, specialists from Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan visited us. Tajikistan also shows interest,” she said. Belarus has just started establishing relations with Chinese colleagues.

Close cooperation is maintained with international organizations. “We have become a so-called testing ground for the UN Statistical Commission. The main pilot projects, like filling out questionnaires or preparing some information, are tested on our service. This is, on the one hand, an additional burden, but, on the other hand, it means improvement. We do this willingly,” said Inna Medvedeva.

The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) also works hard to integrate the statistics agencies of its member states, eliminate discrepancies in the data, and unify the methodology. Representatives of the Belarusian National Statistics Committee participate in all statistical working groups and subcommittees of the integration association. They also make part of the advisory committee on statistics. “An interesting and promising area of its work is the development of a system of indicators for the digital economy in the EAEU states. The selection of sustainable development indicators is also a key area of activity,” Inna Medvedeva said.
