Belarus considers nomination of Minsk Independence Avenue for UNESCO heritage list

MINSK, 10 February (BelTA) – Belarus considers nominating Independence Avenue (Prospekt Nezavisimosti) in Minsk for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Relevant matters were discussed at a meeting of the National Commission for UNESCO on 10 February, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The meeting considered matters related to the preparation and promotion of national nominations to the UNESCO world heritage lists. The National Commission supported the initiative to propose the architectural ensemble of Independence Avenue in Minsk for inclusion in the list as part of an international serial nomination Socialist Postwar Architecture in Central and Eastern Europe,” the ministry said.

Work will continue on the preparation of the Belarusian nomination files Celebration in Honor of the Budslau Icon of Our Lady (Budslau Fest), Bagpipe Culture which will feature the Belarusian pipe, and later Wild-Honey Farming.

Besides, the National Commission for UNESCO discussed the priorities for the work of themed committees in the context of the celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the Belarusian book printing. The anniversary is included in the UNESCO anniversaries calendar, so it will be celebrated by the whole international community.

Members of the commission also discussed Belarus' election to the UNESCO Executive Board for 2018-2021.
