Belarus, Brazil sign agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters

MINSK, 18 June (BelTA) – Belarus and Brazil concluded an agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters. The document was signed by Belarus Justice Minister Oleg Slizhevsky and his Brazilian counterpart Torquato Jardim in Minsk on 18 June, BelTA has learned.

According to Oleg Slizhevsky, this is a serious step towards protecting and guaranteeing the rights and lawful interests of citizens and economic entities of the two countries. The agreement creates a legal basis for the exchange of information in criminal matters between the law enforcement agencies. The document sets out the legal framework which will enable the parties to take measures to launch criminal proceedings, identify and confiscate the proceeds of crime, obtain testimony, conduct forensic and crime scene examinations , etc.

The justice ministries also signed a memorandum of cooperation. It envisages further joint activities, exchange of information on the work of the ministries. “We have identified the areas of mutual interest. This also applies to the preparation of draft regulations, the scope of execution of court decisions and decisions of other bodies,” Oleg Slizhevsky noted. The ministers also discussed the areas such as notary and legal services and the regulation of these services at the state level.

The two sides are in favor of preparing a draft international agreement on legal assistance in civil matters as soon as possible.

Torquato Jardim added that the fight against transnational organized crime requires joint interoperability. “Problems are global, therefore we need joint cooperation. We must harmonize our legal systems,” he said.

The Brazilian justice minister is in Belarus on a visit on 17-19 June. This is the visit of the head of the Brazilian justice ministry to Belarus.
