Belarus' ambassador plants birch in Budapest Botanical Garden

MINSK, 11 November (BelTA) – A birch tree from Belarus has been planted in the Botanical Garden of Budapest, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Embassy in Hungary.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Hungary Aleksandr Ponomarev planted a birch tree in the Botanical Garden of Budapest on International Energy Saving Day that is marked on 11 November. The birch tree was gifted by the Central Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The event brought together representatives of Hungarian government authorities, diplomats, and Belarusian citizens who live in Hungary. Aleksandr Ponomarev spoke about Belarus' efforts to protect forests. He noted that Belarusian forests help improve biosphere and environment not only in Belarus but also in Eastern and Central Europe.

Aleksandr Ponomarev also spoke about events timed to International Energy Saving Day held in Belarus, promotion of energy conservation and transition to renewable energy sources, as well as Belarusian policy in environmental protection. He stressed that Belarus' efforts in this field contribute to achieving some of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN. Aleksandr Ponomarev pointed out that Belarus is ready to cooperate with any country, including Hungary, in order to exchange best practices in achieving the SDGs.

After the official ceremony to plant the birch, participants of the event tasted Belarusian birch sap.
