MOSCOW, 30 June (BelTA) – A wreath from the Belarusian Embassy in Russia was laid at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow on 30 June. The solemn ceremony marked the 72nd anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders and Belarus' Independence Day, BelTA has learned.
Attending the ceremony were Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Russia Igor Petrishenko, Deputy State Secretary of the Belarus-Russia Union State Ivan Bambiza, EEC Minister in charge of Industry and Agriculture Sergei Sidorsky, Executive Secretary of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Belarus-Russia Union State Sergei Strelchenko, Russian MPs and military commanders, representatives of the Belarusian community in Russia and bodies coordinating the Belarus-Russia integration processes, and diplomats.
The participants in the ceremony also laid flowers at the memorials Minsk Hero City and Brest Hero Fortress at the Alley of Hero Cities in Moscow's Alexander Gardens. A military orchestra performed the Belarusian anthem. The ceremony concluded with a performance of the guards of honor team of the Preobrazhensky Regiment.
“3 July is an important date not only for Belarusians, but also for the people of Russia. We fought against the invaders shoulder to shoulder, and worked together to restore the economy devastated by the war. According to the established tradition, we gather at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to pay tribute to the memory of those who died defending our land,” Igor Petrishenko told reporters after the ceremony.
The diplomat pointed out that today Russia and Belarus jointly counter any attempts to rewrite the history of the Second World War. “The memory of that war must be passed on to future generations,” Igor Petrishenko emphasized.
