Applications invited for implementing environmental projects in Belarus using GEF money

MINSK, 13 July (BelTA) – Applications can now be submitted for implementing environmental projects using money of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), BelTA learned from the website of the Belarusian Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Ministry.

GEF's seventh financial period began on 1 July to last for four years. There are plans to allocate about $8.6 million for implementing environmental projects in Belarus by 2022. The projects will focus on the three areas GEF prioritizes: climate change ($5.6 million), land degradation ($1 million), and biodiversity ($2 million). As much as 10% of the total sum will be channeled into GEF Small Grants Program projects in Belarus.

The Belarusian Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Ministry has set up an interagency working group led by Deputy Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Minister Andrei Khudyk to take care of cooperation with the Global Environment Facility. The group is supposed to put together a quality portfolio of applications for projects vying for GEF funding during the seventh financial period. The working group will look into project applications and evaluate them for compliance with national priorities and Belarus' international commitments.

Applications for the projects can be mailed to 10 Kollektornaya Street, Minsk, 220004 or emailed to icd@minpriroda.gov.by with the note GEF-7 by 10 August. The projects are supposed to focus on environmental problems in the areas GEF prioritizes.

The Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Ministry pointed out that GEF financial support will be made available for a project if the beneficiary covers 75% of the total cost of the project with its own funds.

Information about GEF's work and rules for submitting project applications is available on the GEF website.
