Ananich: Belarusians' trust in national media remains strong

MINSK, 6 February (BelTA) – Public confidence in national mass media in Belarus remains strong, Belarus' Information Minister Lilia Ananich said at the meeting of the Belarusian Information Ministry to discuss the performance in 2016 and the main tasks for 2017, BelTA has learned.

Lilia Ananich noted that the Information Ministry closely monitors the Belarusian information space with the assistance from the Center of Sociological and Political Studies of the Belarusian State University. “The results of the research conducted by the Center show that Belarusians prefer to get information on politics, economy, ecology, and culture from the national mass media. Belarusians' trust in the national mass media remains strong, and is much higher than in the Russian media,” Lilia Ananich said.

At the same time, the increasing influence of the Internet on the public opinion is evident. “2016 saw a fast growing web presence of the state media, both local and national ones,” Lilia Ananich noted. “New technology is a source of competitive advantage in the battle for the audience between the media.”

Lilia Ananich said that, on the whole, 2016 was a year full of creative and dynamic events in the field of information of Belarus. Mass media supported national priorities in the development of the national information space, helped consolidate the society and assisted the fulfillment of social, political, and economical tasks of the country. “Market trends were favorable for the printing industry; we completed all 2016 programs on book publishing and presented our books at many forums abroad,” Lilia Ananich noted. She also reminded the colleagues about the forthcoming Minsk Book Fair, which is to feature exhibiters from more than 30 countries. “We need to promote the printed book more widely. In the year of the 500th anniversary of the Belarusian book printing, every shop or stand selling books should promote reading culture,” Lilia Ananich stressed.

“We have many goals today. They are achievable. It is only our national mass media that can consolidate the Belarusian society to address the most complicated of the tasks. Then Belarus will remain a peaceful, beautiful, and confident country,” Lilia Ananich said.
