Aircraft hijacking prevented during CIS air defense exercise in Minsk

MINSK, 15 August (BelTA) – An attempt to hijack an aircraft was prevented during the computer-assisted command post exercise Regional Security 2018 of the CIS joint air defense system on 15 August, BelTA learned from Chief of the Air Force and Air Defense Command of the Armed Forces of Belarus Igor Golub on 15 August.

The exercise is taking place at a computerized secondary air force and air defense command station, which is part of the Belarusian-Russian joint regional air defense system. The exercise is focused on preparing and deploying troops (forces) of the Belarusian-Russian joint regional air defense system in the Eastern Europe collective security region.

Igor Golub said: “During the practical stage of the exercise today we simulated the situations one may encounter most frequently. Responding to an attempt to hijack an aircraft for various terrorist purposes is one of them. Today we've also practiced the most dangerous situation: violation of the state border by a combat aircraft. In the third episode the aircraft lost visual orientation due to circumstances beyond control. The pilot and the crew cannot get their bearings. Giving them assistance is a job of the alert air defense forces. In this situation we intercept the aircraft by getting the interceptor close to the stray aircraft and guiding it back to the right route. When the captain of the aircraft tells us the bearings have been found, the interceptor pulls away and we deem our mission complete.”

Theory and practice was combined in the course of the computerized command post exercise. “This exercise involves not only maps and computers. It includes practical elements, too. The results of the modelled situation and practical work will be used to determine the effectiveness of the existing system. We will work out the optimal combat composition for carrying out missions within the framework of the joint air defense system. The exercise will help bolster our interaction with colleagues from the Russian Aerospace Forces in the course of air defense,” concluded Igor Golub.

The Regional Security 2018 exercise is taking place on 14-16 August in order to improve the Belarusian-Russian joint air defense system and enhance the combat performance of the troops (forces) of the joint air defense system in the Eastern Europe collective security region.

A team to support the work of the commanding officer of the Belarusian-Russian air defense system has been set up. They are using automated workstations in the secondary air force and air defense command station, which has a set of simulators named Plisa to train and improve skills of tactical officers in addition to hosting computer exercises.

A software package developed by Belarusian specialists and commissioned by the Belarusian army is being used to process graphic documents inside the local area network. A tactical engagement simulation system named Svisloch is used to judge the effectiveness of the decisions being made.
