Afghan war Belarusian soldiers commemorated in Minsk

INSK, 16 February (BelTA) - The internationalist-soldiers who died in the line of duty was commemorated in a ceremony on the Island of Courage and Sorrow in Minsk on 15 February , BelTA has learned.

The ceremony was held on 15 February, the day marking the 29th anniversary of the pullout of the Soviet troops from Afghanistan. It was attended by representatives of the government bodies, public and veterans' organizations, members of the Armed Forces, cadets of the military schools, and also the veterans of the Afghan war, mothers and widows of the fallen soldiers.

A message from Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko was read out by First Deputy Head of the President Administration Maksim Ryzhenkov.

Belarus Defense Minister Andrei Ravkov said that the situation in the world has not become more peaceful. “More than 400 conflicts are ongoing. Terrorist, subversive methods are actively used. We, in Belarus, honor, remember and appreciate the feat of the internationalist soldiers on the Afghan soil. More than 770 of our countrymen fulfilled their duty there till the end. The Afghan war veterans are the backbone of our country's statehood. Their role in patriotic education and ensuring the security of our land, peace and stability is very high,” the minster said.

According to Interior Minister Igor Shunevich, the memory of the brothers-in-arms, who gave their lives and health in that war, lives to this day. We see the continuity of their heroic deeds today in the police, the Armed Forces and all military formations. We remember our history and respect it. This will always be this way in our country,” he said.

A minute of silence was observed to commemorate the memory of the soldiers who died in the line of duty in the Afghan war. Wreaths and flowers to the memorial were laid on behalf of the ministries and departments and other government bodies, organizations and veterans.
