$22bn spent in Belarus to deal with Chernobyl aftereffects

MINSK, 19 April (BelTA) – An equivalent of $22 billion has been spent in Belarus to deal with Chernobyl problems. The statement was made by Anatoly Zagorsky, First Deputy Head of the Chernobyl Aftermath Alleviation Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry, during an out session of the Presidium of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus on 19 April, BelTA has learned.

Anatoly Zagorsky remarked that for thirty years Belarus has been putting persistent efforts into preventing radionuclides of Chernobyl origin from affecting the health of the nation and the environment. The government policy on overcoming consequences of the catastrophe is based on the laws on the legal regime of the territories, on the social protection of citizens affected by the catastrophe, and on special government programs. So far five national programs and three programs of the Union State of Belarus and Russia have been implemented.

According to the source, the legal base to cover all areas of the efforts aimed at overcoming consequences of the Chernobyl disaster has been created in Belarus. Public funds are used to provide enhanced medical screening and general rehabilitation of the population. The affected territories follow special containment routines. A lot of other measures have been taken to overcome consequences of the disaster. The measures have been financed by the central state budget and municipal budgets, proprietary resources of corporations, and credit resources.

Meanwhile, the long-term nature and the scale of radioactive pollution in Belarus necessitate efforts aimed at maintaining the necessary levels of social and radiation protection, at ensuring the life of the regions with minimal restrictions imposed by radiation. With this in mind the relevant government program for 2016-2020 has been adopted, with the funding exceeding Br26 trillion.

The official said that results of the work Belarus has done in the last 30 years justify the choice of actions despite the grave consequences of the Chernobyl disaster. These results as well as acquired experience and knowledge invoke respect not only in the closest neighbors — Russia and Ukraine. These results, acquired experience and knowledge are studied and are applied by many countries that use nuclear technologies.
