WASHINGTON, 10 May (BelTA - Xinhua) - Eighteen were injured in an improperly conducted science experiment at a high school in Tennessee of the United States, authorities said Wednesday.
The explosion was caused by an unintentional chemical reaction in the science lab of Merrol Hyde Magnet school of the city of Hendersonville, which caused a temporary fiery-flash which lasted three to five seconds, local fire department chief Scotty Bush said.
Seventeen students and a teacher were injured in this accident and were treated at the site. Eight of them, who suffered second-degree burns, were later sent to a nearby hospital, while Bush said that all are expected to be discharged from the hospital soon.
All lessons for the rest of the day at the school were canceled as the school began their cleanup.
However, the school has not yet specified which chemicals caused the accident.
