President 29.12.2017 | 12:27

MINSK, 29 December (BelTA) – Unprecedented measures to support maternity and childhood have been taken in Belarus, President Alexander Lukashenko told reporters on 29 December, BelTA has learned.

“Belarus provides unprecedented support to maternity and childhood,” the Belarusian leader stressed. According to the president, he asked for consolidated information about the financing of this segment when the 2018 budget was discussed. “When I saw five pages with information I realized that we spend colossal money on it,” Alexander Lukashenko remarked.

The head of state emphasized that the same topic is voiced during the election campaign of Russia President Vladimir Putin. Belarus has already done a lot in this field. “Therefore, the main thing for you is to give birth to children. We will take care of you,” the president said when asked about the birth rate in Belarus.

Alexander Lukashenko added that it is important to preserve positive demographic trends. “People are our security. Belarus's population should be at least 15 million,” he said.

The president also pointed out the need to take care of people's health. This issue was discussed during the visit to the Minsk City Clinical Oncologic Dispensary. “I took them (doctors. - BelTA's note) a few minutes to convince me that if we take care of our health and diagnose diseases on time it will be easier for them to treat us. We have other healthcare institutions of this kind. The state has done a lot for our children,” the Belarusian leader added.
