No effect from drought on Belarus food security

KAMENETS DISTRICT, 28 August (BelTA) – There are no reasons to worry about the national food security due to the drought. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made the relevant statement while talking to workers of the agricultural company OAO Belovezhsky and residents of the village of Ryasno on 28 August, BelTA has learned.

“There are no reasons to worry,” said Alexander Lukashenko when asked whether the country may face a shortage of food and raw materials for the processing industry due to the abnormal heat wave. This year's grain harvest in Belarus is good despite the drought. The overall harvest is about 500,000 tonnes below last year's. Apart from that, the country has reserves of 2 million tonnes. “This is why people should not worry about it. We already have a sufficient amount of grain via state-guaranteed orders. Now agricultural enterprises ask us to buy more grain from them,” said Alexander Lukashenko.

The President admitted that because of the drought he is concerned about the situation in the Polesie region due to sandy soils over there. The head of state said he intended to go there in person soon in order to get familiar with the state of affairs in the region.

“But I have no doubt that the country will not notice consequences of this drought,” underlined the President.
