MINSK, 7 October (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko warned against ill-considered privatization of state-owned assets when addressing the Belarusian Parliament on 7 October, BelTA has learned.
“I admit that the privatization process in Belarus is filled with red tape, even though some MPs may hold a different point of view. We made it so on purpose. Many generations worked hard to create this property. We cannot sell for a song something that does not belong exclusively to us,” the head of state stressed.
“I admitted before that no other country has so much red tape involved in the privatization process. But the stakes are high. Besides, we have nowhere to hurry,” Alexander Lukashenko noted.
He pointed out that he is an advocate of ‘pinpoint' privatization. “We could not issue a law and sell everything, like Russia did. I was guided by the belief that privatization should be ‘pinpoint', and that we should sell only those enterprises that we are unable to operate effectively,” Alexander Lukashenko said. He added that privatization should bring benefits to the country.
