Lukashenko urges to toughen punishment for drug crimes

MINSK, 28 January (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko urges to create unbearable conditions for drug dealers. He made the statement at the session of the board of the Interior Ministry to discuss the performance of law enforcement bodies in 2015, BelTA has learned.

Alexander Lukashenko stressed that on his behalf he has made all decisions regarding the fight against drug addiction.

“But I insist that the result is the main priority. These people should be caught and put to prison. And the punishment for such crimes should be very tough,” the head of state noted.

The President reminded that he had already given such instructions and asked about their fulfillment. In his opinion, now it is time to analyze the situation and decide if more decisions in this and other fields are needed.

“It is a disaster. These people kill other people. We should prevent them from doing it because everyone is in danger, especially children. Therefore, you should use the toughest measures here. Tell me what else you need,” the head of state emphasized.

At the same time, Alexander Lukashenko said that perseverance and balanced approaches to the fight against the spread of drugs helped make a difference in a number of areas. “We have managed to prevent the distribution of spices and saved many young lives. Now you can strike a severe blow against the distributors of these dangerous substances, effectively close the channels of supplies to Belarus,” the head of state said. “The changes in the conditions of punishment for drug dealers prevented the increase in the number of addicts. At the legislative level we have built a comprehensive system and determined the powers and authorities of all public bodies and other organizations in this field.”
