Lukashenko: Scientists who show results should be paid more

MINSK, 7 April (BelTA) – Belarusian scientists should be paid more, but only if their work yields results, Alexander Lukashenko said during the government conference held in the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus on 7 April to discuss problems and prospects of developing Belarusian science, BelTA has learned.

The head of state commented on the salaries of scientists and research staff. Alexander Lukashenko believes that “nobody should be given money for no reason”. Money should be earned. The Belarusian leader noted that the state is ready to provide science with more funding since the economic and social development of Belarus relies on innovations.

Meanwhile, Alexander Lukashenko stressed that there should be no one-size-fits-all approach. He believes it is necessary “to pay more, but only to those who show results.”

The conference is discussing different proposals on ways to solve problems in Belarusian science. For instance, the participants are considering ways to improve the personnel capacity. The head of state voiced support for the idea to use the results of a science and technology program as a basis for a dissertation or doctoral thesis.
