Lukashenko, Rumas discuss wide range of economic issues

MINSK, 27 April (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko met with Chairman of the Board of the Development Bank of the Republic of Belarus Sergei Rumas on 27 April to discuss a wide range of economic issues, BelTA has learned.

“I would like you to describe the situation in the economy, and, of course, in our circulatory system – the financial sector. As a professional banker, financial expert, as a person who has been working in the government for some time, you feel it,” the head of state emphasized. “Perhaps, there will be certain factors of concern. And I would like you to inform me about these facts, if there are any.”

Alexander Lukashenko remarked that “it will be very important for making a decision in the future.”

The president asked Sergei Rumas what the National Bank and, perhaps, the government could do in this field. “Besides, I asked you to keep your finger on the pulse and try to accumulate the situation in the banking environment,” the head of state continued.

Apart from that, the meeting focused on the situation in the wood processing industry, and its development prospects.

The participants of the meeting also discussed the revival of Polesye where the chairman of the board of the Development Bank was born. Alexander Lukashenko asked what else, according to local residents, can be done to develop this region. The president also spoke about the rotation of crops on reclaimed lands, and urged to pay more attention to this issue. For example, as the experience of this year shows, not everything was done in a right way. Flying over reclaimed lands in those regions, the head of state saw that about 30% of winter crops have died. “Why did they die? Because the winter crops were sown on low lands, reclaimed lands, and, of course, water stays there in spring,” the president said. “The crops soaked. The question is as follows: does is make sense to sow winter crops there or is it better to grow grass?”

The head of state was also interested in the issue of family capital, the progress in the School Bus project, the situation with the development of rural estates.

The president was informed bout the operation of the Development Bank in 2016 and Q1 2017, the state of affairs in affiliated companies. Sergei Rumas told the president that the preparation of the five-year wood processing development strategy had been completed.
