Lukashenko, Putin discuss possible meeting, interaction in EAEU, relations with USA

MINSK, 23 July (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko had a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the initiative of the Russian side on 23 July, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian leader.

The heads of state discussed the bilateral agenda with an emphasis on the expansion of the trade and economic cooperation. The sides agreed to continue mutual efforts to preserve positive cooperation dynamics. Vladimir Putin invited Alexander Lukashenko to visit Russia in the near future. The possible meeting of the two leaders during which they are expected to discuss bilateral relations in detail may take place in Sochi.

The presidents paid special attention to the promotion of integration in the Eurasian Economic Union, implementation of previous agreements between the EAEU member states. They also discussed the preparations for the session of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council in Saint Petersburg on 27 July.

The heads of state also discussed the international agenda. They particularly focused on the relations between Russia and the USA, including the results of the recent talks of Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Helsinki. The Russian leader informed Alexander Lukashenko about the details of the meeting.

The presidents paid special attention to armament control and the extension of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) between Russia and the USA which is due to expire in February 2021.
