Lukashenko meets with Syrian minister of presidential affairs

MINSK, 5 April (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko met with Syrian Minister of Presidential Affairs Mansour Azzam on 5 April, BelTA has learned.

The head of state warmly welcomed the Syrian guest: “It is good that you have come to Belarus. It is very useful for us to learn from you what the situation in the country is and how the Syrian people and the president of Syria live.”

Mansour Azzam stressed that it is an honor for him to meet with Alexander Lukashenko. “This is a testimony to the warm relations between the presidents of the two countries. I would like to give you a letter from Bashar al-Assad,” the minister said.

He also spoke about the current situation in Syria and those huge losses, human losses in the first place, of the Syrian people. The Syrian representative also took note of a big role played by the Syrian president. Mansour Azzam made a detailed account of the situation in Damascus and the steps taken to bring peace back to the country.

Mansour Azzam is in Belarus on a working visit from 1 to 5 April. He has already met with Head of the Belarus President Administration Natalya Kochanova, Education Minister Igor Karpenko, Chairman of the Nesvizh District Executive Committee Gennady Solovei. Mansour Azzam also visited Minsk Automobile Plant (MAZ), Minsk Arena, National Art Museum, National Library, the Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War, the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theater, and the national historical and cultural museum-reserve Nesvizh.

Belarus' exports dominate in the bilateral trade and economic cooperation. Last year, the mutual trade made up $44.3 million, with exports being $36.9 million and imports $7.4 million. Belarus mainly exports to Syria its trucks, milk powder, butter and medications. Belarus imports Syrian cotton fiber and fruit. There is a joint Belarus-Syria commission on trade, economic and technical cooperation. Its sixth meeting took place in Minsk in 2015. The parties are currently coordinating the place and date for the seventh meeting.
